I joined the group 23 Things Surrey , to explore and improve my knowledge around the digital tools available to me not only as a PhD student, but as an aspiring professional in the field of research.
As an individual that has been working in the business world for many, many years, I am familiar with the larger landscape of technology and social media applications available, such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and so forth. However, my use of these tools is limited to personal/family sharing (such as photos and text messages). Some of the concerns I have about the use of these social platforms is personal privacy, time commitment and conflicting objectives, that is, gaining from the experience versus exposing too much information about oneself.
Conserns aside, I am interested in learning about the “professional” application and use of these tools, so that as I progress in both my academic and eventual research career, I can create and build upon a platform that grows with me without compromising on my concerns. Looking forward to the journey that unfolds along the way.
Congratulations on setting up the blog! I’m glad to hear the specific focus you’ve got for the course and hope we can go through some valuable tools and approaches for you. Looking forward to hearing how you get on.

It is good to hear that you are approaching this with cautious optimism – I think that is a good start with these social media things. Sam
